A few weeks before the start of the Aloha Classic 2018 RIWmag got agree with Jorge Salgado (99NoveNove, Gaastra, AL360, MaverX) to prepare the reports from this event which was supposed to attend with his son Nicolo’ (Tabou, Ga Sails, MaverX, Al360).
A few hours after the start of the races but’ RIWmag received a message from Deborah, Matthew's wife and mother of Nicolo ': “Unfortunately Matthew cannot make the race because she's sick, and’ in hospital and cannot make items! Sorry”
Matthew and’ world renowned for its great sports and human qualities. If Matthew, After going up in Maui, a few hours after the race was over at the hospital and had not been able to inform us of the accident meant that something had happened to really seriously.
So our first response and’ been: “We so sorry, Don't worry! Think of Matthew! We don't hurry!” and after a few days we were able finally to know something more’ Debora again: “Unfortunately he had 4 Cardiac arrests, It is now out of danger but it was hard”
Then thankfully Matthew and’ managed to get out of the Hospital just in time for the youth of the Aloha Classic where the son Nicolo’ did plunder of titles: Fourth youth, 2nd U17, first PWA U15 and thanks to these results vice world champion U15 of the PWA Youth Wave World Tour 2018.
But let together with these two protagonists the events of those days.
RIWmag: Matthew thanks to your sporty lifestyle you've always kept in good shape. What were you’ success on the eve of the Aloha Classic and how you lived those moments?
Matthew Spanu: Greetings to all readers of RIWmag first of all. Maybe the age began to take its toll. The causes of illness I think you can attach to a set of things like time zone (twelve hours), I was rested enough and entering immediately into the water for several hours, a bad power supply (that's plenty of exercise is essential), two days before the incident I skipped lunch because here is really hard to eat properly, to this was added a virus (treated for two days really bad) that finding myself weak did the rest; short cut by writing that I had four cardiac arrests (the first in the House and another three in hospital caused by excessive and persistent necessity by operators of various blood samples). The days were definitely heavy for Debora who looked a fright.
I am very rational, I tried to forget about it now and move forward even if physically I was a m. .. . Unfortunately I'm sick in the head and my only thought was to get back as soon as possible in the water (Debora obviously doesn't know that until I read this interview, Debora everything OK!!! hahahahahaaaaaaa) and follow the race of Nico and nephew Alessio.
RIWmag: Nicolo ', everything was ready to participate in the races but … having to accompany his father to the emergency room in those conditions should not have been emotionally easy for a young kid like you. How did you live those moments?
Nicolo’ Salim: Hello RIWmag, Thank you for this interview, they were hard times especially for my mother, but I don't know how but I was very quiet, subconsciously I knew nothing would happen, I reacted rationally helping my mother.
RIWmag: Matthew, After a few days finally were out of danger and together with your family you could breathe a sigh of relief. How are you now and when you will be able to return to windsurf as before?
Matthew Spanu: You, Let's say that after trequattro days I was resigned to my delight and a little’ less to that of Deborah; i think the guys haven't understood perfectly what happened, Surely the young age made his, and it's better that way. Guys I came already in water, Obviously the first day one hour, and then I listened to my body to understand how far I can get day by day. The only pain I physically felt and that now I no longer feel was in the chest because of three cardiac massage due to the absence of heartbeat for more than twenty seconds of the previous days. Fatigue due to all the fuss now is almost a memory. Tomorrow we return for the fifth time in water.
RIWmag: Nicolo ', your dad’ and’ managed to get out of the Hospital just in time for your heats. How did you manage to blow, After all that fright, to regain focus and determination to get off in race?
Nicolo’ Salim: I sincerely didn't frighten me, Maybe my young age but maybe I didn't realize the danger he ran my father. However before you enter the race I was very focused and before each heat my father gave me some advice, and it was next to me the entire race, without remembering the old days and keeping the concentration for the race.
RIWmag: Matthew, the race was now irreversibly compromised. In return, Nicolo’ and’ managed to accomplish a true masterpiece earning compliments of all and we know how to get compliments in a commercial wave super technical as Hookipa is very difficult, especially for those riders who are at home here. What do you think of the performance of Nicolo '? And’ able to compensate your disappointment at not being able to attend the Aloha Classic 2018?
Matthew Spanu: Unfortunately you, my race went to hell, While Nicholò and Alessio (my nephew) had yet to begin, I tried to give Sam the right suggestions. Alessio went great ending the amateur category (Don't be fooled by the word amateurs because the first eight are in competition, angry as heck here in Maui) with an excellent fifth place out of thirty-two members for me very questionable and I close here writing "bravo".
Nicolò races were very nice because participants despite his young age had a very high level, Schettewi brothers, Japanese riders Takuma how OS Ischii and participating in several races PWA, and various Hawaiians. Greater satisfaction for me was to have centered the under20 final, Although she is ranked fourth, ma era l’unico quattordicenne contro ragazzi di 17\18 years.
