Federico Infantino (Goya Windsurfing, MaverX Masts, Gath Sports, Quatro International, MFC Hawaii, Al360 boom, Flymount, That's Surf West, Prakash Design, Ocean Lovers festival, Surflogic Australia, West Wetsuit, New Hampshire) and’ returning to the crime scene that he and’ more’ Congenial, that is, among the great Australian waves.
But at the beginning of the year, a wipe out XXL him and’ cost a serious accident: “I've been pushing my best in the last few months both in the water and especially out because of the work and the new house.
During a windsurfing session I landed an aerial in the wrong section, the wave caught me from behind and I slammed into the fins of the board several times. At first I didn't give us that much weight, I felt a little bit of pain but it was certainly not the ugliest wipeout I've had, so I decide to keep surfing for an hour. Unfortunately the night after dinner I noticed that something was wrong and a suspected internal hemorrhage was taking place. I've been through the next 12 hours in 3 different hospitals walking 800 km between car and ambulances.”
The release of his new video and’ was an opportunity to retrace those tragic moments.
RIWmag: Federico what you were diagnosed when you got to the hospital?
Federico Infantino: As mentioned above, it took 12 hours of time, 3 different hospitals and 400 km between car and ambulance to know how it was happening to me.
Perth hospital was diagnosed with a ruptured Urethra which is the connection between the bladder and the penis.
I've been through maybe 2 worst and most painful weeks of my life due to what has come of "repairing the damage": without anesthesia, doctors had to come in with probes and mini cameras inside, I had to keep a catheter to 10 days that subsequently caused a serious infection when they took it off me.
But on second thought I was also pretty lucky considering that the bloodshed I had going on inside the body found an exit point (you can imagine which), otherwise, considering the distances and the time it took to understand what I had, I would have seen it even uglier.
RIW: Now you're completely healed or you're going to have trawls as a result of this accident?
TE: At the moment I can say that I have returned to the 90%, I'm going to have to keep doing some checks every time 3 months to accept that the scar heals in the right way, otherwise in the long run I might have problems with circulation and urine flow.
RIW: How long will you have’ wanted for full recovery and return to windsurfing exits?
TE: Many of you know me, who can't infer it from the new video, I'll get stuck in a bed for 2 weeks with "tubes coming out of my body" and a bag attached to my leg for urine ... couldn't last long. The first week I was completely stuck with pain, during the second I started to get up and move even getting to use shovel and cariola to finish some work of the new house.
I entered the water again after 1 month and 1 week during the Australian Championship at Margaret River. This year I had a great goal for that race, but unfortunately I wasn't ready at all because of the accident that cost me one of the biggest wipeouts of the season at the first wave.
RIW: Here in Europe as you know, and especially in Italy, right now we're not talking about anything else. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic all activities’ at sea are prohibited and apart from workers who offer strictly necessary services, everyone else can leave the house just to do the shopping and very few other activities’ Essential (lock-down property). From what we find this virus and’ also arrived in Australia. What’ the situation on your continent from this point of view? And’ been imposed the lock down even them’ from you?
TE: I constantly follow the Italian news and I am close to you. Here the situation for now is quite under control even if anything can happen: we have about 6000 cases across Australia, 51 Dead, about 600 cases in Western Australia. The government has closed all air connections, states and regions. You can also turn within your own region while maintaining the appropriate distances and precautions. For now you can still surf here in WA. Restaurants are only open Takeaway and accommodations are closed. Australia's fortune is the huge vastness and distance between places, especially in WA, bad luck is the lack of hospital infrastructure that is mostly located in Perth.
RIW: So here's your latest video, “Western Australia 2020 – Federico Infantino”, a mixture of windsurfing, wild nature, desert excursions, mountain biking, Skate, all filmed in Western Australia. Thank you for this new clip from 6 minutes that we hope will distract and make our readers stay indoors waiting to get back on the board!
TE: Thanks to you for the interview and I hope this video, a little bit longer than my standard, bring some "distraction", my plan was to return to Italy in June to celebrate my first 30 years, at the moment, however,, as you can imagine, the plan is on stand by.
I take this opportunity to thank and mention 2 companies with which I started a new collaboration, as well as GATH Sports, Surflogic Australia and West Wetsuit who not only see me as an athlete, but also in marketing and content creation.
