The past weekend was an artwork of Neptune and Aeolus work throughout the Italian peninsula. Strong Mistral winds blew from Friday to Monday, for which many riders, Professional or not, they took advantage of the Liberation Day to spend unforgettable days with a single thought in your head: windsurfing.
One of the most interesting spots for waverider was Capo Mannu and all other neighboring spot (Funtana Meiga, Mini Boss), may be due to the appearance of the famous Kauli Seadi (99 NoveNove, Hot Sails Maui, Mormaii, MFC, clubekauliseadi.com) a few weeks ago in which three-time world champion has made a spectacle as perhaps only Thomas Traversa a few years ago had done.
The same Kauli, He decided to return in Sardinia, abandoning the European tour momentarily stood in Corsica, in order to risurfare the big waves sardines, but this time it was in the company of two other pro, Akgazciyan Nico (99 NoveNove, Challenger Sails, Sooruz, Leucate, Le petit Balthazar, Maui Ultra-bright Fins, Techno Limits), joined little in water because of tendinitis, and Dieter Van der Eyken (Starboard, Severne Sails, Continent Seven, Camaro Wetsuits, Black Project Purposes).
We took advantage of the storm, asking the audience what were their impressions after this weekend:
Gigi Romano, very strong athlete of Marina di Grosseto State: “This weekend was epic. We arrived on Saturday and we made for a’ exit at Marina delle Rose fair. Nice to jump and surf a bit…
Sunday we moved to boss, Nice condition, good wave. We had so much fun, the boss always has that magical glow. Shame about the 50 sails on peak, Although it's nice to see that the sport is still alive!
Monday,, What about… EPIC!! Beautiful, waves pissed and really busy condition … I think the pictures speak for themselves… In water even some Kauli that practically was another sport. Now we are back with the ferry, Sardinia never disappoints!”
Michele Citizens young athlete Cagliari (Click here for the interview) State: “Numerous windsurfing in water this Sunday and high level with Kauli looking show. I had never seen so many people make wave all together in one spot, in this case, Capo Mannu who gave us a beautiful day with set on 3 meters and wind on 20 nodi da 4.7. Were present on the spot windsurfers from all over Italy the most diverse local kiters. Sunday was the second day of the Mistral here at Oristano, the weather forecast gave very strong wind and wave big enough with a good time, typical conditions for a nice exit to minicapo. Many sails in water including Kauli Seadi who took advantage of the biggest waves during the first few hours of light of day with Jorge Salgado. Wave and wind conditions difficult but very funny, many kite in the water and as many surfers from wave. In the afternoon we decided to change spot and get to Funtana Meiga, where the wind was stronger. Forty or more people in the water, However Funtana is a spot very large with many peaks and then at the end the overcrowding did not feel so much like the day before to the head or the same morning at Minicapo. Towards the 17 conditions improve significantly so I take advantage of it and return to the water for the last session of the day along with Jorge Salgado, Adele Frola and the few remaining in water. Beautiful weekend of windsurfing, many people in the water, hot and beautiful waves”.
Francis Chan, classroom 1998, and already able to surf waves of note: “I arrived Saturday at lunchtime at the Cape, wind 4.7 good, 3 meters larger waves and not very tidy, Let's say it was pretty well the shoulder, slowly began to improve, wind always nice breeze, After a while came Kauli, He began at once to make super maneuvers, again the hand of the spot has got to drop and catch any wave, riuscendola even in saltara behind it. Slowly the wave grew more and more until you reach a tree, late at night, perfect waves and big wind 5.0/4.7.
Sunday we come to Funtana towards the 10:00, waves surf booming horizon and North wind Mistral from 4.2 full, the parking lots were full, the wave has dropped after a while’ but you ordered a lot because before it was particularly this foam, at the end of the day the wind for me to 4.2, but heavy ones they had 5.”
Patrick S., Roman young athlete: “Given the promising forecast for the 22 do the tickets and we embark to the land of Sardinia. Just arrived at Olbia winds as expected, but the sea was flat! Expect some’ and we're going to see after lunch in Cala swimming pool and no dice, not even a hint of wave. So we head to Marina delle Rose. After some time, time seems to improve, so did the waves, by 4.5 and 79 For me, I walk into the water and start to test the spot, great for jump, but not so much to catch waves that were not clean.
Day 2 : hours 9 We go to Cala pool boom! Photonic and beautiful big set wind, shame about the direction from the sea. At this point we head in Oristano. Arrived at the famous spot Capo Mannu for the first time, I understand what's so great about this place. Breathtaking scenery, a tree of glassy wave combed from the Mistral, non-stop always frequent waves.
In water the famous champion Brazilian Kauli Seadi, truly phenomenal, unique style and radical!
Horsemanship 4.5 and 79, the wind was strong out but under much laundry. 4 hours non stop, back at 8 in the evening tired but extremely satisfied.
Day 3: hours 10 headed to mini boss, spot downwind to the head. Wind 4.5 much laundry, but dream wave, the right size and really long. Entered the water always with 4.5 and 79, access to the water is a little’ awkward because there's an entrance that allows you to fit comfortably. After two hours of intense, We move in Funtana Meiga. Arrived the conditions were really interesting, beautiful waves but very weak wind, so I decide to arm the 5.3. I go into water and pure fun, smooth waves and frequent.
Francis Maher, Chia Sardinia and local, tells us: “Monday, Funtana Meiga gave us a’ spectacular exit, with wind on 25 nodes from the mistral wind and waves for good measure, made even more pleasant by a warm spring sun. The spot was a little’ busy, but it's still a great sight to see so many people coming from all over Italy give expression to a high-level windsurfing, that is always an incentive to give of their best and improve your riding style“.
Richard C, owner of sails 070Sails emigrated from years in Sardinia: “The last two storms that made working Capo Mannu were incredible for the vitality that has been around this spot that I consider the best wave riding spot in the Mediterranean. Were amazing days where windsurfing has been living with many sails in water thanks largely to "attraction Kauli" which prompted the Chief even lazier windsurfers. The photoshooting walk in closet is definitely helped to bring attention to Sardinia for a surf of the highest quality and that we must be grateful to Caesar Cairo and Jorge Salgado. Kauli obviously did sparks and it was a pleasure to surfarci together in my favorite spot! We hope others will follow his example and come visit us soon!”
Frederick Pisan, Another Young Gun Cagliari, with aspirations as a poet: “The same wind howling caused me to fall asleep, wakes me up in the morning, 25 April, with its slashes on shutters; time to get ready and I get in the car towards Oristano, climbing the Mistral already furious at early hours of the day. The trip goes fast and, immediately after the turning for Funtana Meiga, I see from the Hill the big waves with the inevitable windswept ridges, arrived on the spot there are already’ two dozen windsurfing, horsemanship, I put on my wetsuit and in water, are the 11. At sea the larger waves almost three meters and Aeolus blows on 30/35 nodes, the direction is even slightly off the ground and the waves pulisconono; I see the usual familiar faces and exposures riding buddies but not known sail by Kauli, only later did I discover that it is the mini boss putting in riga all first in ws and then in sup. As time passed, the wind drops and settles around the 20 nodes. After three hours I decide to go back to Earth to drink, before my eyes I find the full, a tangle of dialects and languages, There will be 50 WS in total. Turn our gaze to the sea and I can't help but notice that, hand in hand with the arrival of people at lunch time, It is also a wave along with the wind settling around the 20 nodes; rifocillarmi time and return to the water, the condition is still fun and between a wave and a jump time flies, you make the 5 and with the wind that went farther scemarsi I leave the water leaving the few that remain more ordered and smooth waves of the day as small. I go back to Earth with the smile on his face, I get off calmly and I talk with friends: everyone agrees, Sinis has given us another beautiful day!”
Philip Tumblers, He immigrated in Sardinia for years: “As I watched the evolution of predictions in the days before, I didn't realize more and more that this time would be just a great disruption for the West coast of Sardinia, Finally big waves and strong winds!!! When I read on the internet that the ferries they were full of cars with surfboards on the roof I thought: "mhhh! Next Weekend there will be to do in sportellate to take the most beautiful waves and indeed there was worldwide in water at Capo Mannu ", but who loses it living to an hour and a half from that paradise. For the Big Monday couldn't really miss though, having made up late the night before, I arrived a little late. Remember though that just parked the Mini Boss I saw, with surfers in the water and those outside, a dozen Italian champions between Wave and Freestyle and a certain world champion Kauli do unspeakable things. The water level was very high, Armo in 40 seconds I'll jump in and enjoy one hour of pure enjoyment in an enchanted place. The only sour note unfortunately were wave surfers who are obviously in the best spot and I have insulted from the first to the last wave, but in the end everything passes thanks to the wonderful day together and this sport can give emotions beyond description”.
Alexander Asturi and Vittorio Blardi, they too young Romans, provide us with their vision of the trip: “Windguru website, during the previous week on the bridge 25 April, It requires more and more purple on the pages of Sardinia and Western, as they passed the days. Over the bridge was approaching, the more you outlined a strong West born on Saturday in the North and then navigate by Mistral. At midnight on Thursday 21 the last post Whattsapp of the day said "we are waiting for the latest weather update and load". After many other messages, We are at the end on Friday evening to three friends, Vittorio, Patrick and Alexander, with the windsurfing to share the decision to drop everything for a long weekend in the waves, with a plan to take advantage of the rising Saturday in Cala Poniente swimming pool, then go on to Oristano, where we know that the North West of the following days could give waves of great quality. Approached the ferry trip we are Rena Majore in early morning, When still light winds, but the clouds are running already. We rest no more than two hours here at my house in this village, where we stay the night. Come on then on the wonderful beach, that is not the destination for windsurfing on the day, Although puffs a wind already on 20 knots and will meet to arm the mythical Indio, We know have a tie cord with Rena. It would have been a great pleasure to go out with him to glide on the water crystal clear, but in fact we hurry to find waves to surf side, reason that we move to a few kilometers on the well known Cala swimming pool. Are now the 12 about, but the waves are zero and we decide to go to Marina delle Rose, Lu alias Litarroni, where the softer background determines the earliest waves rise, Although less smooth. We find the spot filled, the machines are already parked in all the crevices of the trail. Never want to leave is such that we decide not to wait for the wave already formed and started to glide with our 4.5 – 4.7. The jumps are wasted on the chop, but it still won't surf. The day he spent with the wind which increases its intensity, but only in the last few hours enjoy waves of about a metre and a half to contend in many many windsurfing and kite. We arrive at night tired and glad this debut, We have dinner and go to bed to make the most of the next day. Sundays 24 morning the blinds chattering and whistles of Mistral give us wake up early, enough to carry energy breakfast and finally get that to assess local commercials for safety, but the storm is too too strong and from sea to practice Swimming Cove, where only one brave is in water, but thinks better of it after a few edges. Greeted friends in the place we start to the final destination, Capo Mannu, without forgetting a visit to Cc, in hopes of one last uscitina in us keeping tack condition: negative results. Crooked and big waves, foam more or less everywhere, no real possibility to have fun. Then quick lunch in Valledoria and away again to the head, where we know we have to invert the foot. We are not without a couple of minor road errors. The spot you get passing first from Putzu Idu, sheltered corner where to find flat water, and then out of the stony paths to deal with drive with that calm that we do not have more, replaced by cries of spontaneous arousal at the sight of giant exploding on the rocks-schiumoni. We place the machine on a piece of land almost imaginary, view here the large presence of our colleagues. We observe the spectacle of waves that swell and windsurfing which for hours we play above and below, straight for the exit and ask for the size of the sail and go with 4-4.5! Some edge to take measurements of a condition that we don't know, but who first who after, We take a brazen confidence with these ondone profusely about three metres. Boards don't make noise on the smooth wave, La vela, fully discharged by the wind absent under the leader, you forget in your hands are four hours of magic. We're not sure if the conditions are exactly those perfect Boss, but this hardly matters, because for us are really good. Just climb on rocks is a bit complicated, principalmemte due to loss of strength. Are the 20:30 passed when we finished to disarm and clothe us, We still haven't found the accommodation. We think of the dinner and we can then coordinate with the operator of a camp very much geared to surfers, just a few minutes from the spot. Do you Monday 25 morning, tiredness builds up and we wake up with its convenient, giving space to a home breakfast prepared by the ' mistress ' of the camp. We go to the Boss and we find out that the condition has grown compared to Sunday. Forget about the spot where the wave is too closed and out of the Cove almost impossible. Next there is the "Minicapo", slightly more hidden stretch of rock where conditions are much cleaner and the waves still of significant size, with up to 3 meters. We leave in two out of three with size as the day before, I make the photos and I lick the wounds on the hands. It is not easy being in the wave with the right timing because there often is to be given precedence, but also because you have to deal with the fatigue of the previous two days, that is felt by those who arrive from the Mainland with its training. In the end, this was a really radical wave output, and rides on glassy waves as we usually see in other parts of the planet, excluding Sardinia, There have been. Usual practices of disposal, but with still a destination. We want to know about Funtana Meiga, where many are migrating in search of some burst of a wind that goes really fast disappearing. Sandwich in Putzu Idu and twenty-minute trip to the new destination, where we arm again all three, Although the gradual decline of the wind gives reason to Patrizio opts for 5.3. This final stage was not up to the other but you can't reject the spot. If he has his reputation means that we will find a new opportunity to ride him, We arrived evidently out of time, This is demonstrated by the small sails crammed on erected”.
Matthew Spanu, strong local and State: “In these two weekends we surfed perfect condition as not used for a long, to raise the bar we thought even two guys walk in closet Kauli and Nico. We surfed under various conditions, by the head with four meters, in Funtana to jump and try various evolutions; Nico also tried a beautiful double. At this time I received news that Mussolini would have us a little thought and waits for info on conditions that will arise for Sunday/Monday. I am happy that our commercials are appreciated by various samples”.
Stuart Cameron, young local Oristano tells us: “This weekend was memorable. Sunday, a full day to Capo Mannu as not seen for some time, the conditions at the top but still a beautiful exit along with many friends and especially with pro. In the water during the various sessions, there have been discussions about priorities but it all worked out in the most clear way. Monday still returning from day to the head, We walked to Funtana Meiga. Even Funtana hadn't been so for a long time: 2 meters and some set of 2 and about 30 knots side-off. A day to try so many new maneuvers with all crash tenders, even the waves were really good for surfing. In Short, This disruption has appeased the diligent desire to surf. To conclude these two wonderful days a beer together with all friends, windsurfers and not “.
Here are some shots provided by Andrea Mariotti enhance appreciate us from home these awesome waves oristanesi.
