J.H.: E’ libertà, fuga, pace, bellezza, natura, equilibrio. Mantiene giovane un vecchio!
English version (part 2/2)
RIW: The Hot Sails Maui team is quite big but probably, beside you of course, over the years two other members got as Hot Sails Maui icons with a worldwide visibility: Bruno Andre (AHD owner) and Diony Guadagnino (PWA rider). How did these collaborations develop? Which are the key shared points in these collaborations?
J.H.: I do have one weakness as a business owner- if I do not like the people I work with; I simply do not work with them. I need a connection with the person, and understanding of the spirit and joy of windsurfing and life. Sounds silly maybe, but I do this business from my heart, not my wallet and this is a big part of the payment for my work. I must be happy with my team and crew who help me. All the best rider situations have happened the same way- Riders recognize my work and the spirit of the brand and they come to me. The only times I have pursued riders are when my favorites have had to join other brands and I want them back, like Federico Lacroix. I had to find him and ask him to come back because his windsurf spirit was so strong.
RIW: This year Hot Sails Maui sponsored Kauli Seadi. You declared that he got the biggest sponsorship which so far Hot Sails Maui could ever offer. Does it mean that despite the worldwide economic crises Hot Sails Maui is living a rising trend? Or does it correspond to a change of sponsorship strategy? How could this happen now and not before?
J.H.: Have you ever heard the expression “Be careful of what you wish for, it might come true” ? Well this is the story of how we got Kauli.
RIW: How was this sponsorship born? Were you looking for a big PWA name and Kauli could meet what you were looking for or was an opportunity out of your plans which you realized you could not miss?
J.H.: This is a funny story. Last year we made a list of every rider we see at Hookipa and the list was nearly 100 names long. I wanted a rider who could lead our team. We have a great worldwide team, but we were missing a leader, someone everyone could look up to. Someone who would motivate our design team. There were only 5 people on that list of nearly 100 top wave sailors who I felt would be a good match for us. Kauli’s name was at the top of that list, but of course he was out of our reach- we never even spoke to him! But a few days before Christmas I had a letter in my in box from Kauli- He asked if I would like to work together on some new sail projects.
RIW: How do you see the windsurfing world in the next future and how do you see Hot Sails Maui playing in this world?
J.H.: After 30 years I am a little bit concerned with the state of the sport. Of course other sports have been poaching windsurfers away for decades- Kiting, SUP to name a couple, but also other sports not related to windsurfing. So though many people still learn to windsurf, many people do not follow through and buy gear. For my brand there is not a huge change, but when I see brands that used to be 20 or 30 times larger than mine, and now they are maybe only 2 or 3 times larger, all the while my size has changed little, this is not a comforting situation. Hot Sails Maui has always been about making new and innovative sails and rigs and I continue to innovate now, even in the entry-level area of the sport. This is really where it is needed the most.
RIW: You love windsurfing because …
J.H.: Freedom, escape, peace, beauty, nature, balance. It keeps an old man young!
