Robbie Douglas: 55,65kts nei 500 metri e ancora una volta Outright World Speed Record a Luderitz 2010, KIte World Champion. Ora forse cercherà di portare a casa anche un bel record in Windsurf!!!
Rob Douglas è il Rambo dello Speed, uno Speed Knight duro e puro: coraggioso, grande cuore, grande tecnica … Prende il suo lavoro molto seriamente … Per lui 60 nodi significano “casa”.
Ha conquistato il record del mondo di Speed prima nel 2008 poi nel 2010 con 55,65 nodi (con un run in un canale impossibile nel quale si ruppe il braccio nella “caduta obbligata” per fermarsi a fine corsa), e il record era di quelli pesanti: Outright World Record (record assoluto, non di specialità). Nel 2012 Il New York times produce un video di 6 minuti dedicato alla sua voglia di riconquista del Outright World Speed Sailing Record!

Oltre a tutto ciò è anche un ottimo padre, marito e business man con il marchio di famiglia Black Dog!!
Quando viene in Francia con i suoi due fratelli (Campioni di Speed anch’essi) ed il suo Coatch Gebby ( Mike Gerbhardt: ex medaglia Olimpica nel Windsurf), è incredibile osservare il loro approccio professionale, la cura che mettono dalle 5 di mattina, nella preparazione del materiale … Una Super Famiglia!
“Al momento di pubblicare … purtroppo Il Campione Americano ha informato il suo amico Principe che è appena venuto a conoscenza del fatto che dovrà combattere con un brutto male … Pregheremo per lui con la certezza che ancora una volta vincerà la sua battaglia!!! Forza Robbie!!!
L’intervista quindi era precedente alla funesta scoperta…
Un tete a tete tra due amici che si divertono … e che si rispettano a vicenda … due Speed Knights per i quali lo speed e qualcosa di più grande di “uno sport” !!!
Principe Andrea Baldini: Ciao Rob, che piacere fare questa intervista!!! Benvenuto in Italia … attraverso RIWmag!
Rob Douglas: Con piacere buddy … grazie a te … È sempre una gioia parlare con un “fratello di speed”. Sto bevendo un Java proprio adesso mentre sto scrivendo … “chilling out … big time”.
P: Qual’ è stata la tua più grande emozione nello speed?
R: La mia più grande emozione l’ho provata quando ho fatto i due Ouright World Speed Sailing Records … e anche quando li ho persi!! L’emozione del mio titolo di Campione del Mondo Speed è stata anch’essa molto sentita … Le dure battaglie con gli altri forti partecipanti!
P: Cosa hai provato subito dopo la run del record del 2010 (a parte il braccio rotto)?
R: Nel secondo run che ho fatto sentivo di poter battere i miei 55 appena fatti al primo run … lo spazio per rallentare dopo il run era pochissimo ed ho tagliato il traguardo a 56-57kts … Ho commesso l’errore di saltare fuori dalla tavola, sono caduto e la mia gamba è stata presa dal cavo esterno del kite … questo ha causato diversi kite loop in 40-50kts di vento … E il mio polso non lo ha gradito troppo … specialmente quando sono stato trascinato a piedi in avanti a 45kts … cercando di arrivare al mio quick release!!!
P: Quanto vento c’era quel giorno e che attrezzatura hai usato?
R: Il vento era 45kts di media con raffiche sopra i 50 qualche volta; ho usato un Cabrinha 9m Swichblade con 24m di cavi. La tavola l’ho disegnata io con l’aiuto del mio coach Mike Gebhardt e l’ha costruita il grande Curtis Hasselgraves. Straps, pads e trapezio: Da Kine.
P: Cosa rappresenta per te lo Speed?
R: Per me Speed significa il rider contro il vento … Navigare veloce di lasco … bello pieno … Competere negli spot ventosi … nella parte più ventosa della terra … Questo mi piace!!! Vedere e sentire 55kts di vento nell’acqua … Osservare le raffiche lasciare la spiaggia portando con loro un muro di sabbia alto due metri … E a quel punto chiudere tutto e andare al massimo!!! Heavy weather racing!!! Questo per me è il vero navigare … invelato all’estramo!!! Odio andare di bolina col venticello ascoltando il canto degli uccelli!!! Lol!!!
P: E si … come ti capisco … Torniamo a noi, come hai cominciato a fare Speed?
R: Ero abituato a fare speed in windsurf con mio fratello Jimmy: Speedsailing tra due fratelli su tavole bump&jump … Invece il mio debutto ufficiale in gara risale al Luglio 2008: Fuerteventura PKRA Speed event.
P: Hey, ci sono voci che dicono che hai fatto qualche run col windsurf dopo tanti anni … Forse avremo qualche sorpresa un giorno? Io penso che farai bene 
R: Ho proprio gradito quella breve speed session con te Principe, lo scorso Aprile alla Water Pump …
lo speed è speed, non importa con quale materiale …. un ricordo che mai dimenticherò. E poi non si sa mai … Mi piacerebbe combattere per superare il Windsurf Speed Record Americano che appartiene a Roddy Lewis: 44.42kts!
P: Come ti alleni: mare, strada, palestra?
R: Normalmente 2-3 volte alla settimana in palestra … corpo libero, un po’ di stretching, poi corro 2-4 miles 2 volte alla settimana … e quando ci sono più di 25kts o le onde allora sono in acqua … sempre!
P: Quando navighi in allenamento preferisci traiettorie lineari o slingshot? Cosa ne pensi di questi due modi di navigare?
R: Facevo slingshot quando la mia velocità di punta era tra 50 e 53 … così con lo slingshot riuscivo ad aumentare la VMax … Oggi lo faccio solo se devo testare qualche materiale in top speed … Di solito navigo in linea retta adesso, … io ho già passato i 60kts in top speed … Ma se vuoi vincere una gara speed non puoi fare slingshot … devi andare dritto per 500 metri … Le gare sono di 500 metri … e per questo mi alleno per i 500 metri … per vincere!!!
P: Che differenza hai constatato nella tua posizione in Windsurf e Kite?
R: La posizione è differente, i windsurfers stanno più dritti … i kiters seguono il vento con il corpo … il feeling è simile … speed è speed ed entrambe le imbarcazioni sono molto veloci!!
P: Cosa ne pensi di La Franqui come uno spot per un Grande Campionato del Mondo Windsurf e Kite … insomma per te è uno spot di livello mondiale?
R: La Franqui è un posto speciale per lo Speed … Per me dovrebbe ospitare il più grande evento Speed Kite Windsurf della storia … 2 settimane … così si è certi di prendere la Tramontana forte … Dai facciamolo buddy!!!
Io amo La Franqui … e penso sia per questo che sono stato in grado di fare il record dello spot e vincere alcune edizioni del Mondial Du Vent (praticamente tutte quelle in cui ha partecipato tranne 1 vinta da Bringdal … se vuoi vincere in un posto … lo devi prima amare!!!
Quando morirò voglio che un fratello dello speed sparga le mie ceneri li’ mentre soffia più di 50kts di vento … Mentre il sole splende scintillante nel Cielo … Un vento infernale … e mentre sta in run … Navigando oltre 50 nodi … ecco allora rilascerà le mie ceneri al vento e all’acqua … E’ così che me ne voglio andare!!!
P: Hey Rob … Mi hai fatto venire un brivido … Ma torno sulla terra … Ti piacciono gli eventi misti Kite Windsurf come il MDV (Mondial Du Vent)?
R: Penso sia la cosa migliore … C’e più divertimento per entrambi … Amo il MDV per questo … Peccato che il Dunkerbeck Speed event sia solo per il Windsurf e non vuole invitare i Kites … Sarebbe magnifico!!! Lunga vita al Mondial du vent e grazie Pascal Maka per tutto l’impegno profuso per regalarci questo incredibile evento!!!
P: Si Pascal è un grande … Cosa ne pensi riguardo alla possibilità di andare forte in condizioni di vento più leggero (kite e windsurf)? Pensi sia possibile presto? Il Foil secondo te può essere utile in questa direzione?
R: Certo, presto andremo più veloce con meno vento … Col kite e tavola gigante già adesso si possono fare 44-45 nodi su 250 metri in 20-25 nodi di vento … Il foil è interessante … ma per andare sopra i 50 nodi i foils avranno bisogno di cominciare ad usare un albero … I foil mulytiple come AC boats sono il futuro per lo speed windsurf e kite che vanno col foil … C’è parecchio materiale da mettere in acqua al momento!!!
P: Interessante!!! Cosa ti sentiresti di dire a chi si sta avvicinando allo Speed (non importa se col Kite o col Windsurf)?
R: Desiderio … amore per il settaggio dell’attrezzatura … E odiare perdere … mai arrendersi!
P: Tu di cosa ti occupi a parte lo Sport?
R: Quando non lavoro faccio Surf, SUP, vado a pescare … mi piace anche andare al poligono e partecipare a competizioni con la pistola … e ho appena cominciato a tirare con l’arco compound con mio fratello piccolo Brooke e Nico Parlier … è fichissimo e aiuta a rilassare il cervello …
P: Io amo la tua famiglia … Quest’anno mi è mancata la tua fantastica mamma … il potente Jamie e il mio caro amico e fratello di SUP Morgan … Dai un abbraccio a tutti loro da parte mia …

When he comes to France with the 2 brothers Jamie and Morgan (other 2 Speed Champions) and the coach Gebby (Michael Gerbhart), is amazing watching their professional approach, the cure they made from 5.am to prepare and tune the gear … Super family!!!
Unfortunately just before to go on line I hear from Rob that now he has to fight against something bad … orrible news … we all pray for the Great Rob and we trust he will win soon as he normally does!!! Go Rob Go!!!

PAB: Hi Rob, what a pleasure to make this interview!!! Welcome in Italy … trough RIWmag!!!
R.D.: You are welcome buddy … thank you … it’s always a pleasure to talk to a brother of speed! I am drinking a Java right now as I write this … chilling out big time.
P: Which was your bigger emotion in your speedsaling life?
RD: My biggest emotions in speed sailing came from setting my 2 outright world speed sailing records and also loosing them! The emotion of my world title in kite speed was pretty emotional for me as well … tough battles against strong competitors!
P: What did you fell after the run of the world record 2010 (a part the broken arm)?
RD: I fell on my second run trying to beat my 55.5kt that I got on the first run … the exit was very short and my speed across the finish was about 56 to 57 knots … I made a mistake getting off my board, crashed and got my leg caught in an outside line … this caused the kite to loop a few times in the 40-50kts of wind … and well the wrist didn’t like that too much when I dragged it across the beach at 45kts … feet first … trying to get to my quick release!!!
P: How much wind there was that day? And which equipment were you using?
R: The wind was about 45kts average … gusting a bit over 50kts sometimes. I was using a Cabrinha 9m Switchblade on 24m lines. I designed the speed board with help from my coach Mike Gebhardt. The speed board was built by Mike Zajicek and the V2 custom fin was built by the great late Curtis Hesselgraves. My straps, pads and harness were all built by Dakine.
P: What does speedsailing represent for you?
RD: Speed sailing for me is the rider vs. the wind. … sailing fast downwind, full power … Competitions in windy locations in the windiest parts of the world … I love this! Seeing and hearing 55kts of wind on the water … seeing the gusts leaving the beach with a 2 meter high wall of sand and dust … and then sheeting in!!! Heavy weather racing! For me its true sailing … extremely powered!!! I hate sailing upwind in light conditions listening to the birds singing!!! Lol
P: Hey Buddy, I fully understand you!!! Well, when did you start Speedsailing?
RD: I used to speed sail with my brother Jimmy on windsurfers all the time when we were young … speed sailing between 2 brothers on bump and jump gear … My first official speed event was at the PKRA speed event in July 2008 at Fuerteventura.
P: “Rumors tell” that you tried again to had a windsurfing session after many years … Maybe we will have some surprise one day? I think you will do well
RD: I really enjoyed that little windsurf “speed” session with you Príncipe at the water pump last April …
speed is speed no matter what the equipment is … a memory that I will never forget. You never know … I would love to go chase down the American windsurf speed sailing record held by Roddy Lewis at 44.42kts!
P: What about your work out … In the sea, road and gym?
RD: Usually it’s 2-3 days a week in the gym … with free weights, some exercise strength classes, running 2-4 miles 2 times a week … when it’s windy +25 kts or the waves are good then I’m in the water … always!
P: When you train speedsailing do you go straight or slingshot?
What do you think about this 2 way to do gps speedsailing?
RD: I used to slingshot when my best max was around 50 to 53 knots so I could get better Vmax speeds …. sometimes when I’m training and I need to feel or test some high Vmax speeds on the gear then I will slingshot. Usually I sail straight now because I have been above 60 kts Vmax and if you want to win a speed event you cannot slingshot … you must sail straight. For 500 meters during competitions sailing straight is faster, so that’s how I train! Train to win!
P: Which is the difference in stance and feeling when you kite or windsurfing speed?
RD: The stance is different … the windsurfers stand up more straight … the kiters need to lean more to windward … the feeling is similar … speed is speed and both boats are very fast.
P: What do you think about La Franqui as a spot for a big World Championship for windsurf and kite? I mean is it a great spot for you?
RD: La Franqui is a very special speed spot! Great wind … always challenging the rider … and the French people love speed sailing … la Franqui should host a huge world championship speed event for windsurfers and kiters … racing together … 2 week long event so we get a smoking Tram. Let’s organize it buddy!!! I love la Franqui and I think that’s why I was able to set some course records there and win some MDV’s … you need to love a place if you want to win there …
when I die I want a fellow speed brother to spread my ashes when it’s blowing 50kts + … with a bright sun shining … windy as hell … and while on the run and while sailing above 50kts boat speed release my ashes to the wind and water … that’s how I want to go out!!!
P: Hey Rob … I got a shake … Ok I’m back … Do you like speed events mix kite-windsurf like MDV?
RD: I think that’s the best way … it’s more fun with both. I love the Mondial for this … it’s too bad the Dunkerbeck windsurf speed events won’t invite kites. That would be great! Long live the Mondial du Vent and thanks for all of Pascal Maka’s effort with this great event!
P: I always see you working hard … you and all the USA Speed team!!! How much is important the Talent, the equipment, the heart and the physical preparation?
RD: Speed sailing for me has always been fun … so I think fun usually ends up being fast! I’m lucky to be 100kg’s for sure … the equipment is very important … the tuning should never end. I love designing the gear. For me what I love is being at the event site and seeing the conditions … knowing the weather reports and then making the good decisions!!! I love making good decisions to match the gear to the weather, to the water, to the wind, to the situation and to the competitors. Of course you have to be in good physical shape to perform so that when the time comes you are able to achieve the results … its different for each speed sailor … for me I love being with a team when I compete … brothers, coaches and friends make it better. Bill Lynch has been instrumental in my speed career … without his support and enthusiasm I would still be trying handle passes with my baggy shorts on!!! Lol
P: Yes Pascal is great!!! What do you think about going fast in lower wind (kite, windsurf) … will it be possible soon? Can foil open some door in this direction?
RD: We will go faster in lighter conditions. With the kite and a giant speed boards we can average 44-45kts over 250 meters in 20-25 kts average wind speed right now! The foil is interesting but I think to go faster than 50kts the foils will need to depart from using 1 mast … multiple foils like the AC boats is the future for speed windsurfers and kitesurfing using foils. But we shall see … that’s a lot of material to push thru the water right now!
P: Really Interesting!!! What would you like to say to the guy who is going to approach the speedsailing ( doesn’t matter if kiter or windsurfer)?
RD: If you love going fast and you love sailing in strong winds then you are going to love speed sailing … I think it’s the purist form of sailboat racing … get a good GPS and start making runs!!! Rig big and sheet in buddy!
P: Which is the best quality a speedsailor should have?
RD: Desire! … love tuning … and hate to loose!!!
P: What do you do a part the Sport?
RD: Away from work I surf, SUP, go fishing … I also shoot pistols in IDPA competitions … and I just started shooting a compound bow with my younger brother Brooke and Nico Parlier … it’s awesome and helps slow the brain down a bit!
P: I love your family … this year I was missing your lovely mother, the strong Jamie … and my “SUP buddy” (and great fast friend) Morgan … give them a huge hug from me!!!
