17/02/2023 – The SAILING WEEK LANZAROTE ends 2023.
The Israeli team dominated the iQFOiL women's races throughout the week. The difficult breeze on the race course prevented the medal races. So Israel took all three places on the podium, with Shahar Tibi (ISR) on the top step. In second and third place respectively Sharon Kantor (ISR) and Maya Morris (ISR).
“I would have liked to do more races today, But according to our format we haven't completed enough races to run the Medal Races.”, said Tibi. "Anyway, I am very happy to have won, and it's a great achievement to see Israel take all the places on the podium. We worked very hard as a team, at home and here in Lanzarote.
This place offers perfect conditions, all types of waves, Some waves that I don't think you can find anywhere else in the world. Almost every day it is navigable and we enjoyed training and racing here".
iQFOiL Men: gold for Mestre
It turned out to be a much more dramatic and unexpected result in the men's iQFOiL fleet. Sam Sills (GBR) He had won the leader's yellow bib from day one, but the regatta format “The winner takes it all” favored by the iQFOiL often gives surprise victories at the end of the competition. Sills misjudged his approach to the start slightly misjudged., while the French Adrien Mestre (BETWEEN) He quickly came out of the starting gate and continued his race by snatching the gold medal.
"It's an incredible feeling", smiled Mestre, who had risen from fourth place at the beginning of the day. "We have this final format where the winner takes it all., So I knew I had a chance. I said to myself: “Don't think, Just be yourself and go”. I'm really glad it happened to me. It's an incredible feeling." Being here for a month already, Mestre stops a little longer. “I want to train here in Lanzarote before the other races in Europe start”.
Luuc Van Opzeeland (NED) took second place while Sills took second place, who had reigned supreme all week, had to settle for third place.
