English version follows – Si e’ laureata da poco, e’ contagiosamente sempre sorridente e windsurfisticamente fortissima: 2014 World Champion Freestyle, 1st 2014 Warsaw PWA Indoor Windsurfing World Cup Women’s Freestyle, 2013 World Champion Freestyle, 2012 World Champion Freestyle, 2011 World Champion Freestyle & Slalom, 2010 World Champion Freestyle & 3rd Slalom, 2009 World Champion Freestyle, 2008 World Champion Freestyle, 2007 2nd PWA Freestyle, 2006 2nd PWA Freestyle, 2006 Rookie of the year!
Ad Aprile 2014, dopo 3 anni e mezzo ho terminato i miei studi in “Science and Innovation Management”.
English version – she got recently graduated, she is contagiously always smiling and in windsurfing is very strong: 2014 World Champion Freestyle, 1st 2014 Warsaw PWA Indoor Windsurfing World Cup Women’s Freestyle, 2013 World Champion Freestyle, 2012 World Champion Freestyle, 2011 World Champion Freestyle & Slalom, 2010 World Champion Freestyle & Slalom 3rd, 2009 World Freestyle Champion, 2008 World Freestyle Champion, 2007 PWA Freestyle 2nd, 2006 PWA Freestyle 2nd, 2006 Rookie of the Year!
RIWmag interviewed Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard, NeilPryde, Chris Benz, Maui Ultra Fins, Mystic) to take with her the 2014 evaluation and to outline the prospects in 2015.
RIW: What was your final result for 2014? Are you satisfied?
S-Q.O.:In 2014 I finished: 1st in Freestyle, 6th Wave, 7th Slalom. I’m really satisfied that I was able to do all the disciplines this year. I would have liked to have better overall results for wave and slalom but I missed a slalom event and there was a lack of wind at 2 events. However I was able to finish on the podium at least one time in every discipline. So yes. 2014 was very successful for me!
RIW: Which was the more difficult moment of the 2014 season?
S-Q.O.: The hardest moment for me in 2014 was in La Torche. After 7 events I was really tired and wasn’t sure if I would be able to perform in slalom. Also The crash in New Caledonia was quite tough. I was much less confident when I was competing the days after that.
RIW: Which was the more beautiful moment of the 2014 season?
S-Q.O.: I was so happy to finish 3rd in waves in Tenerife. This was amazing!!! Also, I have said it a lot of times, but New Caledonia was an amazing event, we had wind everyday and I was happy to finish on the podium there as well.
RIW: What are currently your strengths and which points to improve?
S-Q.O.: My biggest strength right now is that I have crazy motivation to improve! I think my level in freestyle is also one of my strengths as it helps me to improve in different disciplines. I lack knowledge of waves. I don’t normally surf and need to practice this more. I’m still a bit scared to go high. So I definitely need to improve my jumping.
RIW: The contract between NeilPryde and you is back. How many years ago did it end and what has been changed today since then in order to make it possible again?
S-Q.O.: Yes it is, and I’m really pleased to be back on the team. The last time I sailed for them was in 2009. They had to cut in their budget back then. Now 6 years later I had a good talk with the team manager and designer about joining the team again. And it felt really comfortable. So I decided to go for it.
RIW: Some years ago you moved from Aruba to Nederland for the University. Where are you now with your studies?
S-Q.O.: Yes I did! I think it’s important to develop yourself on an academic level as well. In April 2014, after 3,5 years I finished my study “Science and innovation management”. This was a dream come true! Now I’m able to take some time off and travel again. I am still planning on going for a Master diploma.
RIW: Women and windsurfing. What’s the actual picture? What do you think about it? How could it be better?
S-Q.O.: I feel like a wave of Women have arrived that are pushing the overall women’s level higher and higher. I’m really excited to see this development! They are all very talented sailors and we’re all working really hard to make ends meet, however we’re not being supported enough! Of course this has to do with the sport’s popularity in general. But think … A good place to start to improve the situation for women is to get more exposure for us. During competitions, in magazines and online. To show that not only guys, but chicks can also rip in windsurfing (and we do it in Bikini’s! Extra points for that!). This gives a more overall picture of windsufing and that it can really be done by everyone. This could finally attract more people to windsurfing.
Check out Oda Johanne, Arrianne Aukes, Maaike Huverman, Lena Erdil, Delphine Cousin, Amanda Beenen, Daida and Iballa Moreno, Fiona Wylde, Alice Arutkin, Olya Raskina and more! They are amazing. Follow these ladies in 2015 I’m sure they will deliver some proper action!
