Mark Grinnel: The Rocket man – 3rd Fastest Windsurf Ever: 51.83kts in 500mt – World Record with Production Board!!!
Mark Grinnel (Panda per gli amici), è uno Speed Knight Sud Africano (di origine Inglese). E’ un imprenditore affermato (ha un’agenzia di sicurezza e multi service), è stato uno dei pionieri dello spot di Walvis Bay in Namibia.
Forse non naviga più di 30 giorni all’anno … ma ha muscoli e passione! Nel 2012 a Luderitz, aveva già archiviato 49,6kts e nel 2014 49,92kts.
Nello scorso Luderitz Speed Challenge in una giornata difficile con più di 50kts di vento e chop (angolo molto profondo) ha fronteggiato i suoi fantasmi e ha preso il Santo Graal!
Principe (Andrea Baldini): Hey che velocità in Luderitz … tanta roba!!!
Mark: … dopo tanti anni di frustrazione finalmente nel 2012 ho capito che i 50kts si potevano fare facilmente col vento giusto, la giusta attrezzatura e la giusta “no fear attitude”; quindi per aver fatto quasi 52 sui 500mt con una punta di 53,41 mi ha reso un uomo felice … ed è stata una buona ragiona per festeggiare a Tequila!!!
P: Cosa ti è passato per la mente subito prima dl tuo Run?
M: Mentre stavo nel canale, in piedi, percosso dalle raffiche di sabbia, in attesa di partire … ho pensato: o faccio 50kts o passo 50 gioni al letto … Questa volta non ci torno a casa con un altro 49 … anche se i 49,92 dell’anno precedente comunque mi avevano fatto battere i ragazzi Olandesi (Hans Kreisel e Jacques Van der Hout) ed ero li’ al vertice.
P: Descrivici il tuo Run e cosa hai provato nel run … e dopo aver saputo lo score.
M: E’ stato folle … Patrik (Diethelm) aveva tracciato con un Marker arancione il bordo del canale per segnare quanto vicini al bordo si potesse passare … ho fatto di tutto per rimanere in quella traiettoria ma le raffiche mi sputavano al centro, nel chop (30cm dal bordo comincia il chop) … le cose stavano così: un uomo a confronto con la Natura … e per una volta ho trovato l’equilibrio perfetto tra sentire che stai andando a morire e il desiderio di sopravvivere. Ed è stato così fino al traguardo … dove una volta sganciato dal trapezio, sapendo che non ci sarebbe stata”strambata” possibile per rallentare mi sono gettato in acqua rimbalzando fino alla fine del canale … da qui mi hanno soprannominato “cannonball” perché sembravo una palla di cannone umana …
Dopo il run potevo a fatica respirare, essendomi rotto le costole la settimana precedente … poi Alberto (Possati) è arrivato e mi ha tolto il giubbetto dei pesi ed ho potuto respirare e ho realizzato che nel botto avevo perso il GPS … quando Roger me lo ha riportato ed ho letto 53,41 sono stato contento come un maiale nella cacca …
P: Cosa è successo invece quando Antoine Albeau ha fatto il record?
M: Ero appena arrivato e stavo male … così ho deciso di non entrare … ma non farò più questo errore … La condizione era perfetta: vento forte ed acqua piatta … incredibile, mai visto il canale cosi’ piatto e con quel vento … penso che forse avrei potuto fare bene … ma è inutile piangere sul latte versato.
P: Quanto pesi e quanto sei alto?
M: Sono 1,78m quindi a short shit, ma quello che mi manca in altezza lo compenso con la forza mentale e se il vento soffia sul serio sarò veloce. Peso 106kg. La mia tecnica fa schifo ma con un paio di Tequila e vento forte io sono senza paura e penso che il massimo che può succedere è morire … ma ho solo 49 anni e quindi mi rimane ancora qualche anno di speed.
P: Perché fai Speed?
M: E’ un modo di vivere al limite … lo Slalom è diverso, navighi con altri … è strano … Anche se è divertente ogni tanto andare fuori e sverniciare qualcuno. Il rush di andare nel Canale, al limite del controllo, è la più grande emozione che si possa provare e alla fine del run sei quasi deluso perché la corsa è finita …
P: Cos’è per te lo Speed?
M: E’ un modo di rilassarmi dallo stress … non devo pensare e stare concentrato a sopravvivere altrimenti si cade!
P: Quale sono le tue condizioni preferite e perché?
M: Il Canale di Luderitz col vento fortissimo o una normale uscita ma quando sei soprainvelato di brutto, se investito da una raffica brutale riesci a farti attraversare da questa forza, ti senti fuori controllo ma riesci a tenere duro!
P: Cosa cerchi quando entri in run?
M: Le raffiche ed essere pronto per loro … no i buchi di vento quelli non li reggo.
P: Che misura di vela, Tavola, pinna avevi nel tuo Run migliore?
M: 5.0 Neil Pryde Evo5, Mistral 41 del 2013, tavola brillante, e pinna Gasoil 20 e 10-12 kg di pesi. A 51,83kts devi dimostrare chi comanda.
P: Cosa ricordi con piacere dell’avventura di Luderitz?
M: Navigare è meraviglioso … ma l’amicizia che si crea è la cosa più importante. Gli Speedsailor sono un manipolo di uomini con la stessa passione.
E mi diverto un sacco ad alzare la temperatura della macchina dei toast così a qualcuno gli si bruciano 
e mi sento al mattino: Dennis la minaccia
P: Dove vorresti navigare ancora?
M: Luderitz ma anche il Sud della Francia e Walvis bay che è un posto incredibile.
P: Che atmosfera si respira con gli altri Speeed Knights?
M: Non potrebbe essere meglio … Competiamo contro noi stessi ma segretamente anche l’un l’altro. Non c’è però invidia e gelosia solo pura gioia per chi ha fatto un gran risultato personale.
P: come hai preso la febbre dello speed?
M: sin da bambino … e poi guidando la macchina, la bicicletta, i gokarts o qualsiasi cosa abbia un potenziale per andare veloce allora ne spingerò i limiti … ma se saremo in due … allora cominciano i problemi.

Mark Grinnel (Panda for the friends) is a South African / English Speed Knight. He owns a security Company, he was one of the pioneer of Walvis Bay in Namibia. He doesn’t sail more than 30 days per years … but he gets muscle and passion.
In 2012 he already did 49.6, in 2014 49.92 and in the last Luderitz speed Challenge in a windy and choppy day (not the day in which the world record falls many times) he front his Ghosts and he got the Graal!!!

Mark Grinnel: Been so frustrated for so many years as after 2012 i knew 50 knots was easily achievable with the right wind, the right equipment and the right no fear attitude so to achieve nearly 52 with a peak of 53,41 made me a very happy man and was a good reason to have a tequila to celebrate.
PAB: What did you have in the mind just before to start?
MG: I said before I started the run while standing in the canal and getting blasted by the sandstorm that i was either going to do 50 knots or spend 50 days in bed but i was not going home with 49 knots again although 49,92 last year allowed me to beat the dutch boys and be right up there.
PAB: Describe your run … and your feeling during and after you saw the score.
MG: The run was insane as Patrick had put orange markers along the side but in the water so that you could see how close to go so i made every effort to sail through them so that i remained close but the chop pushes you towards the middle of the canal so its man versus nature and for one i managed to find the perfect balance between feeling like you are going to die and the desire to survive. This was until the end as after i crossed the finish line and unhooked i knew no gybe was going to work so i jumped off and ended up rolling down the canal where i received the name ’cannonball’ as i really was like a human canonball. After the run i could hardly breathe as my ribs were broken from the week before but after Alberto undid my weight jacket and i could breathe I realised that my gps was missing and when Roger gave it me and it showed max 53.41 ib. I was as happy as a pig in shit.
PAB: What’s happened the day when Antoine did the record?
MG: I was there but we had just arrived and i had been sick decided not sail. This was one mistake i wont make again as the conditions were near perfect and the water really was flat so i do believe i could also have done well but cant cry over spilt milk.
PAB: Your “size” and age?
MG: I am 5.10 so a short shit but what i lack in height i make up for with mental strength and if the wind is blowing strong i will be fast. My technique sucks but with a couple of tequilas and strong wind im fearless and believe the worst that can happen is I die but i’m only 49 so got a few more speed years left in me still.
PAB: Why you do Speed?
MG: Its living life on the edge, as slalom racing is fun too but seeing someone else on the water while i’m out is strange, as i see a target on there back and its time to go fast and kick ass. The rush of going down the canal on the very edge of control is just the bestv feeling you can get and when you get to the end its sort of a disapointment as the ride is over.
PAB: What is the Speedsailing for you?
MG: Its a way of releasing all stress as if i dont think and concentrate on surviving i crash so i have no choice.
PAB: Which is your favorite sailing condition and why?
MG: Luderitz for sure with super strong wind or when sailing recreationally and you are comlpetely overpowered and you get hit by a gust and manage to drive that extra power through the board and you feel out of control but you hold it.
PAB: What are you looking for when you go in the run?
MG: Gusts and being ready for them – not lulls as i don’t handle those well.
PAB: Which sail size, Board and how many weight you had in your RUN?
MG: 5.0 NeilPryde but around four years old, Mistral 41- brilliant board although at 51.83 you have to show it who is boss and around 10 to 12 kg of lead. About fin: Gasoil 20.
PAB: What do you like to remember from all your Luderitz adventure?
MG: The sailing is fantastic but the frienships that you make are the most important as the speedsailors are generally a great bunch of guys. Also burning everyones toast in the morning really makes my morning – dennis the mennace
PAB: Where would you like to sail again? And which new spot do you want to sail?
MG: Luderitz but also South of France and Walvis Bay is an incredible speed spot too.
PAB: What about the atmosphere with the others Speed Knights?
MG: Cannot get better. We compete against ourselves but also secretly each other but there is no jealousy, just pure joy for the person who betters his time.
PAB: When and how did you get the speed fever?
MG: From a child whether its driving my car riding my bike, go carts or anything that has the potential to go fast i will push its limits and if there are two of us then it really becomes a problem.
