“Antoine Albeau
Alberto Menegatti
Julien Quentel
Cyril Moussulmani
Ben Var Der Steen
Gonzalo Costa Hoevel
Antoine Questel
Micah Buzianis
Josh Angulo
Matteo Iachino
In Bocca Al Lupo BAD !

Andrea Ferin does a summary of the PWA slalom 2013 season:
“Antoine Albeau
Alberto Menegatti
Julien Quentel
Cyril Moussulmani
Ben Var Der Steen
Gonzalo Costa Hoevel
Antoine Questel
Micah Buzianis
Josh Angulo
Matteo Iachino
These are the names of the top ten riders of the 2013 PWA Slalom!
After four events this year, Ulsan (Korea) – Costa Brava (Spain) – Alacati (Turkey) – Sylt (Germany), Mr. Double ” A” shows his perfect technical and athletic form by winning the World Cup Slalom Tour with a great season that allowed him to win three events and to leave the top step only once in Korea. His result is even more important when you consider that just a few points behind in the overall standings there are two “dangerous” competitors as:
Alberto Menegatti, 2nd at the end of the season, who has made a big leap and has sailed really fast and improved a lot in the conduction of the race to the point of winning the competition in Korea. He just left the podium in only once event when he had more psychological pressure due to the fact that he had won the previous event. If we analyze the fact that, unfortunately, in the last two events in Turkey and Germany he was not even in perfect conditions … we could venture to say that he would have a huge opportunity … and I do not say more …
The other incredible and determined athlete with an uncommon constancy and one of the best jiber in PWA is Julien Quentel! Who unfortunately, as many people use to say, it is always there … but for some strange coincidences he can never wins … so maybe for this reason he was dangerous for Albeau.
Athletes who have been on the podium overall in recent years are still in the top ten, as Micah Buzianis 3rd in 2012, Ben Var Der Steen 3rd in 2011 and Cyril Moussulmani 3rd in 2010.
So let’s applaud the athletes who have managed to finish in the top ten because the overall level is really high, and perhaps the fact of being able to be consistent in all the races is the most difficult thing to achieve.
If we analyze the results we can see an interesting thing: this year just two athletes (except the top 3 guys) could go on the podium: the first was Ben Van Der Steen, 3rd in Costa Brava behind Alberto and Antoine and … Matteo Iachino, third overall in Costa! Great result for him!
Analyzing the results of the past years we can see that there are also some new entries in the top 10 but the names are always the same: first Alberto Menegatti, with a glorious entry, Antoine Questel and the Italian Matteo Iachino.
Looking for other Italian riders we find Malte Reusher at the 27th place, who has sailed very consistently for the whole year, finishing a lot of eliminations in the top 16 and he also got the 22nd place in Costa Brava.
Immediately behind Malte, at the 28th place, we find Andrea Cucchi with his best ever result, winning a trial in Turkey and having a 9th in Costa Brava. In the 38th place there is Andrea Rosati who was not so consistent, having great results and some bad ones.
Last but not least, I’m at the 40th place, my results were improving over the season which did not begin the right way but finally closing with great satisfactions as I could see that once I got the right trim I can be in the top16 or top20 too, as I could do twice in Sylt.
It has been a really hard season and an incredible year for the italian athletes, who had great results: the second place for Alberto Menegatti just behind a legend like Antoine Albeau, the unbeatable … and the tenth place of the disrespectful (laugh, Editor’s note) 23 years old Matteo Iachino, who was completely unknown two years ago and now he can fight with the top guys! What is there behind this result? Do they have something in common?
Watching from far away they have completely different equipment (Starboard/Point 7 for Alberto and F2 and Challenger Sails for Matteo) but they trained togheter in Tenerife last winter.
But there is something in common, a guy behind the scenes for more than 30 years, who has never wanted to steal the show to the riders with whom he developed and designed the sails they use: Claudio Badiali, ‘Bad’ for his friends, sails designer of P7 and CHS, as someone know! Actually the slalom machine used by Alberto and Matteo and by many other Italian and international riders, me included, are projected in the legendary loft in Senigallia. Matteo Iachino collaborates with Challenger since three years now, and Alberto Menegatti is with Point7 just from this year!
Their jump throw the top of the ranking is objective and obvious: before the beginning of the Tour, Alberto would have signed immediately for a place in the top5, but now that is not enough anymore! The same for Iachino, who would have signed immediately for a top16 place but now he is in the top ten, looking forward to improve his performance in the next seasons as he is just 23 years old (all riders in a better position are older).
This is the consecration for Bad and his 36 years of passion, working and dedication in the windsurf sail design. You usually get these results with international top level riders, and getting them with two Italian guys is even more rewarding! Once more the ‘made in Italy’ comes out in the windsurfing world, and goes with a lot of equipment (boards, booms, masts) developed and created by the genius of Italian professionals despite the national pride is not part of the culture of our flag.
Therefore a big thanks to Claudio Badiali, who developed the sails considered by the insiders between the fastest ones in the PWA World Tour in these last three years! We wish him to improve further his products and to bring an Italian rider (but even a foreign one) soon to the top step in the World Slalom Tour!
Good luck BAD!
A.F.”
